Your Perfect Ski Holiday to France
France is home to over 250 ski resorts, each with its own unique character and ski terrain ranging from massive interconnected ski domains to smaller, traditional Alpine villages. Whether you’re drawn to the luxury of Courchevel, glacier skiing in Tignes, the lively après of Val Thorens or the off-piste wonders of Chamonix, there’s a resort for everyone. With short flights to Geneva and Chambéry followed by quick transfers to an array of resorts, France is an obvious choice for many. Alternatively, if you’re considering driving to the Alps, many of France’s resorts are ideally positioned to reach by car.
As one of the most popular countries for ski holidays in the world, France continues to wow skiers with its well-linked resorts and enormous ski areas. The incredible lift systems in the Three Valleys and Paradiski ski areas whisk you across the mountains so you can explore several resorts in just one day of skiing. Portes du Soleil is particularly memorable with 12 interconnected resorts that encircle a stunning Alpine landscape.

Sophie’s Favourite Resorts
La Plagne
As a big fan of cruisy blues, La Plagne is one of my top picks. It works well for mixed-ability groups, with access to the vast Paradiski, including Les Arcs via the Vanoise Express, offering plenty of variety. I recommend lunch at La Bergerie on the mountainside, followed by a spot of après there after if you’re too full to fit in any more skiing!
Val d’Isère
Generally viewed as a better-suited resort for intermediate to advanced skiers, the Olympique and Solaise gondolas still offer great access to some brilliant high-altitude beginner runs, and with two glaciers in the Tignes-Val d’Isère ski area, snow security is high throughout the season, running late into April.
Les Deux Alpes
I’m not sure I’ve ever had such a well-rounded ski holiday as I had in Les Deux Alpes. The Jandri lift can take you to over 3,000m within 17 minutes without putting on a pair of skis, so even non-skiers can take in the views of Mont Blanc in the distance, and the ski area is one of the most fun, laid-back and cruisy resorts I’ve been to.
Snowboarding in France
France is a great destination for snowboarders with a wide range of slopes and snow parks to enjoy.
- A range of altitudes, steep off-piste as well as groomed slopes and family-sized parks makes France a great option for experienced and beginner snowboarders
- Many cruisy blue and red slopes reduce flat sections of piste and allow snowboarders to maintain momentum
Avoriaz, Les Arcs and Tignes are known for their snow parks with rails, kickers and halfpipes - Visit Avoriaz’s The Stash, Tignes’ Snowpark or Les Arcs’ SPARK.
Activities in France
You’ll find a great selection of activities to discover during your ski holiday in France. There’s so much more than just downhill Alpine skiing. Experience truly memorable activities on and off the slopes with your group when you visit France for a ski holiday.
- Popular activities include dog sledding, paragliding, snowmobiling, and snowshoeing. In some ski resorts, you can even zipline across the valleys
- Les Arcs, for example, is home to the Aiguille Rouge zipline starting from the top of the Varet cable car
- Indulge in one of France’s luxurious mountain spas. Enjoy some well-earned relaxation in heated outdoor pools, saunas and wellness centres whilst marvelling at the Alpine views.
Après Ski in France
When it comes to après, France knows exactly how to throw a good party. Many skiers flock to the lively ski resorts of Val d’Isère, Chamonix, and Val Thorens for the ultimate way to celebrate a great day of skiing.
- Each ski resort in France has a different vibe when it comes to après, from more sophisticated wine bars to table-stomping outdoor hotspots. It’s well-known that France has its fair share of lively après options, bringing skiers back year after year
- La Folie Douce bars have become iconic across the French Alps, combining live music, performances and high-energy après-ski parties directly on the mountain
- Independent bars and local venues offer a more authentic après experience, from traditional Alpine pubs to stylish bars serving regional wines and craft beers.
Sustainable Choice
France is one of the most accessible ski destinations by rail, making it a great choice for a lower-carbon ski holiday. Direct and connecting train services from the UK can take you to popular resorts across the French Alps. We work closely with Eurostar and can tailor-make this package with competitive train rates – call for further details.
Food in France
French ski resorts offer exceptional dining, on and off the slopes, from traditional mountain lunches to Michelin-starred restaurants.
- Savour authentic specialities including tartiflette, melted raclette or a classic Savoyard fondue
- Enjoy a scenic mountain lunch serving Alpine dishes alongside spectacular snowy views
- Michelin-starred chefs showcase the best of French cuisine.
Top Tip: My favourite restaurant in France is La Cucùcina. The menu is exceptional, and the cheese is room stacked floor to ceiling.
Ski Weekends in France
It’s no wonder France is one of the ultimate destinations for an easy ski weekend with short travel times from the UK, plenty of quality accommodation, and resorts that are incredibly diverse. A French short break makes it easy to maximise your time on the slopes.
- With a number of resorts within 90 minutes of Geneva, France is an ideal location for hassle-free ski weekends
- Some of the closest resorts to Geneva are La Clusaz, Le Grand Bornand and Megève, all approximately just an hour’s drive from the airport
- Tailor-made itineraries from our ski experts ensure every aspect of your ski weekend is seamlessly planned.
Snow in France
France is home to some truly remarkable skiing, with resorts such as Val Thorens so confident in their conditions they have a ‘snow guarantee’, challenging people to find a European resort with better conditions. In the lower resorts such as Morzine you may need to be cautious when booking a very early or very late trip, however, France has the facilities to create its own snow.

However, we also provide weekend breaks for those looking to embark on a shorter trip.
As many resorts in the French Alps boast snowy conditions throughout the winter season, any month between December and April is a safe bet! The most popular times to travel are generally during the holiday periods, particularly over Christmas and New Year, and the half-term week in February. Skiing in France during these periods will offer lively resorts and plenty to do. French skiing holidays during spring enable you to enjoy quieter pistes with blue skies and sunshine in abundance.
